It\u2019s confusing, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faced with all the choice, labelling, advice and \u2013 above all \u2013 price points, it\u2019s really hard to know where to start \u2013 or what\u2019s best. In our latest short tyre advice article, Asda Tyres try to help by explaining what goes into making a tyre in the first place, so that you can judge whether cheaper tyres really are a good bet or not\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laying down rubber facts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because \u2013 to most untrained eyes at least \u2013 all tyres look the same, it doesn\u2019t mean they are the same. Simply put, they\u2019re not. There\u2019s a world of difference between cheaper <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asdatyres.co.uk\/blog\/premium-tyres-vs-budget-tyres?utm_source=asda_tyres_blog&amp;utm_campaign=tyre_costs_article_2018\">\u2018budget tyres\u2019, and premium tyres<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yes, while all car tyres are made of rubber, it\u2019s the way that the rubber is processed with other ingredients \u2013 such as carbon, fabric and polymers \u2013 into what\u2019s known as \u201ccompounds\u201d that makes all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what kind of difference?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High-quality rubber compounds result in safer tyres<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The simple truth is that tyres made from low-grade rubber compounds aren\u2019t as effective at gripping the road in wet conditions, with potentially dramatic effects on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asdatyres.co.uk\/blog\/stopping-distance-tyres-play-a-starring-role?utm_source=asda_tyres_blog&amp;utm_campaign=tyre_costs_article_2018\">stopping distances<\/a><\/strong>. The fact is that tyres with inferior compounds are usually the ones sold as \u201cbudget\u201d or \u201cvalue\u201d tyres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insurer, <em>Direct Line<\/em>, asked various tyre industry experts to make the case for buying budget tyres. Not a single one would. This is primarily because the experts believe premium tyres are critical for road safety. You\u2019ve guessed it: based on exact like for like usage, the higher the tyre compound quality, the longer tyres tend to last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, in tests conducted by <em>Which?<\/em> \u2013 based on an annual mileage of 12,000 \u2013 budget tyres only last for two years. Tyres made with high-grade compounds, by contrast, last up to five years. That\u2019s three years longer than budgets. Still think budget tyres are the better deal?
