Can fuel efficient tyres help you save money?

Many of us love our cars and with the UK being faced with a cost of living crisis, there are many ways people are looking to save pennies when it comes to being fuel efficient.

How to save fuel when driving?

There are a few easy and free things we can do to save money when driving our vehicles.:

  • It’s important that you check the pressure of your tyres regularly and ensure they stay at the recommended pressure which is suitable for the load and speed for which the vehicle is being driven. You can find this information in your vehicle’s handbook, inside the fuel cap or on the inside of the driver’s side door.
  • It’s also advisable to drive in a sensible controlled manner by avoiding harsh acceleration and taking it easy when cornering & braking. This will reduce maintenance & tyre consumption.
  • Purchase fuel efficient tyres to help save money.
  • Finally, ensure that you keep both your vehicle and your tyres well maintained.

Do fuel efficient tyres make a difference?
In short, yes. Fuel efficient tyres do exactly what their name suggests and can help to make your drive much more efficient when it comes to fuel consumption.  They have a lower rolling resistance than standard tyres and each tyre features a unique tyre efficiency rating which shows you just how effective that tyre is.

What is a tyre efficiency rating?
Fuel efficient tyres look exactly the same as your standard tyre, so to set them apart they have been labelled with a tyre efficiency rating. Each label will feature a grading on the following three categories which forms the basis of the overall tyre efficiency rating which is graded between A (being the most efficient) to E (being the least efficient).

These categories are:

  • Fuel Efficiency: This test will determine the overall rolling resistance of the materials within the tyre.
  • Braking and Grip: This will test the tyre on the distance it takes to come to a complete stop in both dry and wet conditions.
  • Noise: The tyre will be tested on the amount of noise it emits whilst the vehicle is in motion.

What is low rolling resistance?
Rolling resistance is the force your tyre projects onto the surface of the road. So, a tyre with a low rolling resistance is a tyre that creates much less friction than a standard tyre. By using tyres with low rolling resistance it means you actually use less energy to push your vehicle along. Saving money on the amount of fuel used whilst driving.
