Tyre Maintenance Resolutions for the New Year

As we usher in the New Year, it’s time to not only make personal resolutions but also consider the well-being of our trusted vehicles. One often overlooked aspect of car maintenance is taking care of our tyres. After all, they are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road, playing a crucial role in ensuring a safe and smooth ride. This year, let’s commit to prioritise tyre maintenance with a set of resolutions that will keep us rolling smoothly throughout the year.

Resolution 1: Regular Tyre Inspections

The first and foremost resolution for the New Year should be regular tyre inspections. Make it a habit to check your tyre pressure, tread depth, and overall condition at least once a month. Underinflated or overinflated tyres can affect fuel efficiency, handling, and safety. Additionally, proper tread depth is essential for traction, especially in adverse weather conditions.

Resolution 2: Be mindful with kerbs and potholes

Potholes are a big problem on the UK’s roads and can cause significant damage to your tyres and your vehicle itself. Frequently driving over potholes or driving over a pothole too fast can cause tread separation, bulges or punctures to your tyre sidewall or even damage to your suspension, steering and wheel rims. Keep an extra close eye out for any potholes and don’t underestimate the negative impact they can have on your tyres.

Kerbs are another cause of tyre damage if you are not careful. Although mounting a kerb is often unavoidable, especially if you regularly need to park your vehicle on a street. The best resolution to take into 2024 is to climb kerbs slowly at an acute angle for minimum damage. Mounting the kerb too harshly causes the tyre to become pinched between the kerb and the wheel, weakening the tyre and leading to higher risk of a blowout.

Resolution 3: Not Overloading Your Car

All tyres are made to withstand certain weights which shouldn’t be exceeded. If you do need to carry extra weight for a road trip or a house move, for example, ensure you adjust your tyre pressure accordingly. To find out the load rating of your tyres, simply check the tyre sidewall and look for the number and letter that follows the tyre size. You can then use a tyre load index chart to understand the weight this represents in kg.

Resolution 4: Mind Your Driving Habits

Your driving habits play a significant role in the wear and tear of your tyres. Aggressive driving, sudden stops, and sharp turns can accelerate tyre wear. This year, commit to adopting a smoother driving style. Not only will it improve your fuel efficiency, but it will also reduce unnecessary stress on your tyres, extending their lifespan.

Resolution 5: Seasonal Tyre Changes

If you live in an area with distinct seasons, consider investing in seasonal tyres. Winter tyres offer better traction in cold and icy conditions, while summer tyres provide optimal performance in warmer weather. Make a resolution to switch between seasonal tyres according to the weather, ensuring maximum safety and performance throughout the year. It is worth noting that the UK has a large market of All Season tyres, the majority of which now come with a 3PMSF indicating that they are suitable for snow and icy conditions.

As we embrace the New Year, let’s also extend our commitment to self-improvement to our vehicles. By adopting these tyre maintenance resolutions, you not only enhance your driving experience but also ensure the safety and longevity of your tyres. A smooth ride begins with well-maintained tyres – a resolution that’s worth rolling into the New Year with.
