What is wheel balancing?

Wheel balancing is the process of equalising the weight of a tyre to ensure weight is distributed evenly and that the tyres rotate evenly. Wheel balancing is done by adding or removing small weights on the wheel’s rim to ensure that it is perfectly balanced. If there is an imbalance towards one side of the wheel, the weights would be added to the opposite side to even out the weight distribution.

Within this blog, we’ll look into the wheel balancing process, why it’s important and how it can help ensure driving and road safety.

What is the difference between wheel alignment and balancing?

Many people assume that wheel alignment and wheel balancing are the same thing, however, this is not the case.

Wheel alignment involves making sure your wheels are parallel with each other while wheel balancing ensures that weight is evenly distributed across the vehicle’s wheels.

During a wheel alignment appointment, an expert will check the direction and angle of your wheels. This helps your car when it comes to driving straight with as little movement of the steering wheel as possible.

The reason for wheel balancing is to ensure you don’t have parts of your wheels experiencing more weight than necessary. This is beneficial for all road users as it means you won’t suffer from certain areas of your wheels wearing out before others. Having your wheels balanced also prevents any vibrations through your car and steering wheel, so you can enjoy a pleasant driving experience.

How does wheel balancing work?

Wheel balancing is a simple process that involves matching the combined weight of the wheel and tyre so that it is even on the axle, ensuring that it rotates efficiently while moving at high speeds. This will be done by counter-balancing the weight bias using tiny weights around the wheel in specific areas.

Wheel balancing is carried out using a wheel balancing machine. A mechanic will place the wheel on the machine’s spindle securely. The machine will then spin at high speed to measure the amount of imbalance. The measurements taken from the machine will indicate where weights need adding or removing to balance the wheel.

Driving with unbalanced wheels

Whenever a new tyre is fitted to the wheel, there could be a chance of an imbalance – meaning it is always best to check each time you change your tyres to ensure you don’t drive with unbalanced wheels.

Driving with unbalanced wheels causes your tyres to wear prematurely and unevenly, meaning they won’t last as long as they should. A wheel imbalance can also cause issues with your vehicle’s suspension and wheel bearings, meaning it is very important to ensure your wheels are always balanced.

If you feel vibrations in your steering wheel as you drive, it is probably a sign that your wheels need balancing. Getting the problem solved will not only take the stress off the additional parts mentioned above, but it will also give you a much more smooth and comfortable driving experience.

Why is it important to get your wheels balanced?

It’s important that while you’re driving, your tyres do three things: roll straight, point in the same direction and are balanced. Wheel balancing is key when it comes to ensuring motorists’ wheels have even weight distribution in all areas of their vehicles.

There are various reasons why you need to have your wheels balanced:

  • If your wheels are imbalanced then you can suffer from your tyres bouncing up and down, which will shake the vehicle and cause the steering wheel to vibrate.
  • When tyres are shaking, they may have less contact with the ground which can negatively affect steering, braking and fuel economy.
  • If you have one wheel working harder than another, this will wear quicker and need replacing sooner.
  • If you leave your wheels imbalanced over a long period of time, your vehicle can suffer from undue stress due to your wheel bearings and suspension becoming damaged. These can be really expensive to fix or replace.

The benefits of having balanced wheels

There are several benefits to having your car wheels balanced, offering a safer driving experience and improving the longevity of your tyres alongside other car components. Other benefits include:

  • Optimum driving performance and fuel efficiency from your tyres.
  • Smooth driving, eliminating any chances of unwanted vibrations.
  • Even tyre wear ensures that your tyres will last longer.
  • Improved safety on the roads when it comes to steering and braking.
  • Avoids any unnecessary stress on other wheels or vehicle components, such as your suspension.

How long does it take to get your wheels balanced?

It can usually take between 30-45 minutes to get your wheels balanced. It all depends on the age of your wheels and how many need balancing. Older tyres can take longer than new tyres, this is due to extra wear and any bumps on the tyres.
