Why Does My Tyre Keep Losing Pressure?

Changes in tyre pressure can happen as your tyres gradually lose air, or sometimes due to driving on a different road surface and are often nothing to worry about. However, if your tyre keeps losing air quicker than expected, there could be an issue that needs to be addressed. It is always important to maintain your tyres to keep yourself and other motorists safe on the roads. Read on to find out why your tyres could be losing more pressure than usual.

Slow Puncture

The most obvious and also most common reason for your tyre to lose air quicker than usual is due to a slow puncture. If there is an object stuck in the tread of your tyre, it could be causing a leak of air at the site of the puncture. Check each of your tyres for a foreign object or piece of road debris stuck in the tyre which could be causing the slow puncture. This type of puncture can sometimes be repaired without needing to replace the tyre, however, this depends on where on the tyre’s tread the puncture is. If you find the object in the central ¾ of the tread, it is more likely to be able to be repaired. Outside this area, a new tyre may be needed.

Valve Issue

When checking for a loss of air, it is always a good idea to check the main source – your valve. Tyre valves can sometimes become faulty or damaged, often caused by corrosion or dirt clogging the valve stems. If any of your tyre valves are damaged, it could cause air to leak out of the tyres quicker than usual. If this issue is not fixed, it will eventually lead to a flat tyre.

Impact Damage

If tyres encounter trauma or impact, whether this be something as small as the kerb or more impactful like a collision, the tyre can develop a bulge or lump that can begin to leak air. This can happen upon the impact or even weeks later, depending on how slow the air leak is. More impactful collisions can crack the rim of your wheel, which prevents the tyre from sealing correctly – resulting in a loss of pressure.

It is essential to identify the reason why your tyre is leaking air and losing pressure sooner rather than later. Not only is topping up your air all the time frustrating, but it is also masking the problem. If you leave the issue too long, it will continue to cause more damage and could end up being more expensive to fix. If you do find yourself needing new tyres, Asda Tyres stocks a wide range of tyres to suit any budget.
